Changes in Variance Induced by Random Genetic Drift

چکیده
We noted previously that random genetic drift leads inevitably to the loss of alleles within populations and to the fixation of alternate alleles by different populations. These conclusions extend logically to quantitative characters. We expect the within-population variance of small populations to decline and the mean phenotypes of isolated populations to diverge gradually. There are some interesting surprises however. Throughout this chapter, we will continue to assume that selection is a negligible evolutionary force. We will consider in turn the dynamics of the withinand between-population variances, initially under the assumption that these are due entirely to genetic properties of the base population. Then the covariance between relatives in inbred populations will be considered. The role of mutation will be taken up at the end of the chapter.

Some calculations on the amount of selfish DNA.
A population genetical theory is developed to treat the amount of selfish DNA in a genome. We assume that the selfish DNA consists of replicating units and that it evolves by multiplication within a genome, exchange between genomes, and random genetic drift at reproduction. Special reference is made to the mean and variance of the number of replicating units per genome in the population. Under ...
متن کاملStochastic averaging for SDEs with Hopf Drift and polynomial diffusion coefficients
It is known that a stochastic differential equation (SDE) induces two probabilistic objects, namely a difusion process and a stochastic flow. While the diffusion process is determined by the innitesimal mean and variance given by the coefficients of the SDE, this is not the case for the stochastic flow induced by the SDE. In order to characterize the stochastic flow uniquely the innitesimal cov...
متن کاملChanges in Genetic Variance Induced by Random Genetic Drift
We noted in Chapter 2 that when operating as the sole evolutionary force, random genetic drift leads inevitably to the loss of alleles within populations as well as to the fixation of alternative alleles in different populations. These conclusions extend logically to quantitative characters. Following a reduction in population size, for example, we expect the genetic variance within populations...
متن کاملInduced genetic and morphological changes in Catharanthus roseus L. by cold atmospheric plasma
Catharanthus roseus is widely cultivated around the world. Cold atmosphere plasma (CAP) has been used to improve crop plants seed germination, and plant growth. In the present study, three different times of CAP (40, 50 and 60s) were used for the treatment of C. roseus seeds, and the changes in morphological traits, antioxidant enzymes and the genetic content of the treated plants were examine...
متن کاملA New Formulation of Random Genetic Drift and Its Application to the Evolution of Cell Populations.
Random genetic drift, or stochastic change in gene frequency, is a fundamental evolutionary force that is usually defined within the ideal Wright-Fisher (WF) population. However, as the theory is increasingly applied to populations that deviate strongly from the ideal model, a paradox of random drift has emerged. When drift is defined by the WF model, it becomes stronger as the population size,...
